Suits

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man’s Chest

It was funny from time to time, but as a whole, it went nowhere. None of the plots were actually resolved. It simply was a setup for a sequel. And the “ending,” if you can even call it that, was pathetic (seasons 4 and 5 of Alias come to mind). The failure of the story to actually resolve anything is a major shortcoming that I can’t get past. The acting was great though (classic Johnny Depp makes for good laughs). Go see Superman Returns instead.

Stupid Technology

So I ordered a shiny new 150GB 10,000 RPM WD Raptor last Friday to replace my 74GB Raptor. It came in today (yesterday…) and I set about cloning my data to the new drive. Except that the drive kept freezing up during the cloning process. Wiping the drive was problematic too (stupid thing couldn’t unmount, even when I booted from the 10.4.3 DVD). So I try a bunch of stuff to no avail. So I finally Google it and what do I find? G5s can’t handle a bunch of features on newer SATA drives (and as a result, they don’t work too well with them), so the thing is worthless in my G5. The solution is to get a third party SATA controller card. That’s a pretty worthless solution, as I see nothing but problems with those drivers and OS updates. So it’s probably going to sit on my desk until I get around to building that PC for my CS needs in the next month or two. Argghhhh, stupid technology!

This Is Disturbing On So Many Levels

Private Cameras In Homes
Sound a little Orwellian? I think agree with a statement I read somewhere that people like this should be removed from the gene pool.

I Hate Circuits

I prefer the black box approach to computers- they just magically deal in 1s and 0s, no need to know of XOR gates and latches (or my newest nemesis- ALU units!).

What’s Judicial Oversight

The FBI’s Secret Scrutiny
We’re living in a world of warrants without oversight and data mining by the government of its own citizens. And really - 30,000 NSLs a year, that’s insane from where I’m standing. <sarcasm>I bet they’re all terrorism related.</sarcasm>

Proof By Contradiction

How ridiculous. Not to mention a massive waste of everyone’s time. And this “textbook” if this horrid thing can even be called that, who in their right mind thought this was worth even using as a resource? This abomination uses symbols with no references for just about everything. Ridiculous. Argh.

Blockbuster

So my dad and I took a trip to Blockbuster. The only two movies I had a passing interest in where out of stock. We also spent forever looking around for movies we wanted. I ended up leaving with nothing, and my dad settled on some chick flick and some other movie. I do not miss Blockbuster one bit.

Yes, You Do Need Lube For The Java Final

Things to know:

  • Some General True/False Questions
  • Polymorphism - Questions just like the last test
  • Dynamic Binding
  • GUI with changing dimensions for window and object
  • Linear Data Types (Stacks and Queues)
  • Linked List type stuff
  • String Manipulation
  • Conditionals - DUH!
  • Try-Catch-Throw
  • Subclasses and Classes in general
  • Trees (BSTs & Graphs)

There’s more, but that’s what I remember being on the TWENTY ONE page test. What made the test so bad is that a fourth or so of the test was the last few weeks of material - that we never did any homework on, let alone code anything. The book was also lacking in the code for the last few weeks of stuff. I took the WebCT survey for the extra point on our final grade, and told the professors they were horrible teachers, breakout was a waste of time, the homework was too GUI centric, and that the only redeeming thing about the course was the decent book we used. Thank God that shit is over for now.
