A New Low

I’m an hour early for my CoC:FAB meeting, and it took me 15 minutes to figure it out….. Is my mind going or is it my screwy schedule?

A Sigh Of Relief

Thursday was the first time I’ve had any sizable amount of free time in over a month. And what should I do with that time? Forcibly replace (while preserving the original installation) Apache 1 with Apache 2. I also got MySQL 4.1.x installed, which was quite simple due to it’s packaged format. Speaking of MySQL - the move from flatfile to sql-based SpamAssassin databases has produced quite a large database compared to most of the databases on the server. Our second largest database is my Gallery 2 database which holds about 15,000 records occupying 2.7 MB of space - I believe part of the reason the size is so large is because it uses InnoDB collation, which means the data is journaled- in essence giving it a greater degree of protection. SpamAssassin’s database on the other hand holds a little over 400,000 records occupying 19.8 MB of space. Oh and that file size drops about two megabytes when I optimize it, as it normally hovers around 22 MB. Perhaps I should start playing with replication to the dorm…… Oh and I performed a kernel upgrade on the server, which is quite dangerous since it was first my time. Should something have gone wrong, I would not be a very happy person right now.

Facebook

Among Facebook’s many social networking uses, I’ve found looking at where the ass holes from high school are now one of it’s most enjoyable uses :)

What The Hell!

How the hell am I supposed to feel safer with D. Reed Freeman, of Gator Spyware fame, being appointed to the Department of Homeland Security’s “Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee?” What? The government needs recommendations on installing spyware without user approval, making it a nightmare to uninstall, and abusing the user? It’s dumbass moves like this that make me wonder wonder why I have any faith in government.

Donnie Darko

Awesome dark movie. I was able to guess how some things played into the end, but the end was simply killer.

It’s Not That Hard!

So Tech’s DNS for all but the server’s hostname died in the middle of the day. DNS continued to work at every ISP Joe and I had access to via friends, but not at Tech. I toyed around with the hostname records that controlled the nameservers and I ended up making some recommended changes to the expire and refresh values. I also added A records (records that point to an IP address) in for the nameservers in every record as a number of people recommended on the CPanel forums. Magically at about 1AM things just started working. I’m not sure if this is just a random occurance or if it’s part of a larger problem- we got an update via up2date just before it was marked to be skipped, but I’ve dropped in a support ticket and that should be resolved by the time I wake up. Once this is past us, I plan on moving forward with a kernel update.

Busy Day In The Computer World

WordPress 1.5 is out, no more nightlies for me.
SHA1 appears to have been broken - SHA1 is used as part of just about everything, it’s used to create hashes (Secure Hashing Algorithm) that are used to create a number of things - encryption keys, file integrity hashes, digital signatures, etc. The vulnerability is not as bad as using WEP, but it’s time to migrate to one of the stronger SHAs (SHA256 or SHA512).
Windows users WILL be seeing an update to Internet Explorer before Longhorn - but will we see full, working CSS 2.1 support? They’re only five years or so behind everyone else.
My GT1000 class has me spending all this time doing homework - it’s a friggin one hour course, wake the hell up lady.

Glenn 133

So I switched rooms with Matt last night. Jeff, Anshu, and I had talked about it in the past, but we didn’t think Mike wanted to live with his frat brother Matt. Matt asked, apparently he had talked to Mike about it. Matt moved out in half the time it took me- all those electronics. I’ll put up a picture later, but the living room is awesome. The only thing left is the dresser with a bunch of odds and ends- nothing essential. I’ve also got to clean some stuff up, but we have to move a dresser under a bed before I can do that. Oh and my PowerBook shipped way ahead of Apple’s estimate (2/28).

WebDAV At Last

Joe wanted to get WebDAV working- something that I’ve failed many times trying to get working. With a great deal of editing to Apache’s configuration file and an insane number of Apache restarts, it works. WebDAV lets us publish calendars to the web via iCal and mount a folder on the server like an iDisk if you’re familiar with .mac.

Hate For Java Rising

Cross platform my ass.
