Fever, Back Pain, And My Weekend

My back is killing me. It started Friday after CS- it hurt to walk and not moving seemed to help. Saturday it hurt and my fever didn’t seem to help. It was the best late Saturday afternoon- with virtually no pain. Sunday was filled with mild pain. And now it just hurts. That Advil and NightQuil better help or I’m not gonna sleep at all tonight. I’ve already decided to skip the CoC:FAB meeting in the morning, that way I have more time to rest. Oh and did I mention, I’ve got a cold?

Afterhours Meal Plan

It’s a pity after hours dining isn’t part of the unlimited meal plan…

Freezing My Butt Off

Glenn Dorm At Night January 23, 2005

This weekend was freezing cold. I made the mistake of riding my bike to get to West Campus and ended up having to stop at the Student Center to warm up. While I was there, I checked my mailbox hoping to find the delivery slip for the three Netflix DVDs the post office has been sitting on for a week. To my great surprise, they’d put the delivery notification slip in the box. Wingnuts should be here soon… ummmm…… food :)

IMAP

I switched from POP to IMAP for checking (and now dealing with) my email. I like how everything stays synced no matter where I’m at, whether it be my G5, PowerBook, or even webmail. It also makes getting a new computer easier, as I don’t have to copy and tinker with my old mail. One complaint that some people have (Joe included) is that Mail.app doesn’t respect the .subscribed file, which tells clients which folders to check. In Joe’s case, it sees mail-only user’s folders in addition to his own and they show up in Mail with no way to hide them. I don’t have this issue as my user is attached to justinbellmor.com and not bellmor.com (where my mom’s mail account is stored). The final bonus is that IMAP has a command called IDLE, which enables the mail server to inform you when you get new mail (vs you checking periodically for new mail). I’m going to play with procmail (server side mail filters) to sort my email before I even download it- even less I have to worry about when I get a new computer or when I use webmail.

I’m enjoying Java this semester. I’m just about done with HW2, assigned Tuesday and due Sunday. I can’t seem to get a function I created to work, but we haven’t really covered functions in Java yet. And for some reason, I like Java’s “stricter” syntax over Python’s fairly lax syntax. Calc lecture was a waste of my time- we had some lady come in and talk about how people learn stuff - no Calculus involved… if only Howey Physics had wireless.

You Lose Children!

First place in poker two nights in a row, and my second and third games ever as an added bonus. Three Queens finished off Matt’s two aces :P Anyone but Justin they said, but fate was cruel to them :P I also tracked down the issue with justinbellmor.com in Firefox, Mozilla, and Internet Exploder. The javascript trick that does XML requests without actually reloading the page was causing my problems- wherever it was positioned marked the beginning or end of the rendering of content. I’ve simply moved it to the footer. In the process I also updated some of the templates to a newer version of Mallow, modifying them to my liking (I can’t stand the “e” next to everything when I’m the admin for example).

On to Netflix, I like it so far… I’ve checked out Mystic River, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mine, and Dr. Strangelove. At the moment, I’ve got God, The Devil, and Bob with Harry and Kumar Go To White Castle sitting at the post office. The fact that they do RSS feeds is also very cool. There’s a mailbox right outside the dorm too, which makes returning the videos easier than picking them up. The recommendations system isn’t bad either, but everyone recommends stuff to me as it is. My XBox has suffered as of late- it has been two weeks since I’ve played a ranked game, I only play a game every once and a while with Nate or Adam. Ah, the joys of not having class until 12…

Spring Semester Has Begun

I’ve got a pretty decent schedule this semester, although that two hour, late Tuesday night breakout could be shorter. I’ve got the same Calculus professor and TA this semester for Round 2 of Calc One. The good news is that the format of the class has changed- we’ve got 6 quizes (vs 3 tests), a group project (none last semester), and the final (same as last semester). I’ve had one CS class so far and we’re going to be doing a lot with GUIs from what my teacher had told us. My English professor seems interesting as he gave us “commandments” for writing papers. I have a feeling that Health (HPS) is going to take these key points:

  1. Smoking is bad
  2. Unprotected sex is bad
  3. Alocohol is bad
  4. Drugs are bad, mmmmmmk?
  5. Being fat is bad
  6. Exercise GOOD!

Of course this wouldn’t be a college course without lots of useless additional information like how some no name disease that I have a .01% chance of getting will affect my knee cap. At least the teacher seems nice.

I’ve discovered a small (in my opinion) issue with my site and Internet Exploder. The page only renders the background color, nothing else. It works in Safari and the front page works in Firefox. I’m having issues with individual archive pages though on Firefox. What’s odd is that the markup and CSS is valid. I’ll investigate this more later.

I picked up some really cool posters for the room. I got two Family Guy posters- The family photo poster and a Stewie “Go To Hell” poster. I also got The Matrix poster. I’ve just got to figure a way to put them up, tape didn’t work out.

Who Shall Be Next

Three Years of Preaching The Good Word to Joe has finally paid off. That said… which diehard Windows freak shall I convert next?

I’ve Got The Munchies!

So I’m back in the dorm. Or I should say in my neighbor’s dorm, since Mike is already asleep. My schedule isn’t bad, but it could be better (more sleep!). God… I hate Stuffit Expander like nothing else… for some reason, Apple programmed Safari to decompress GZipped files (.gz), but not the .tar files that are typically inside a gzipped archive, thus forcing us to use Stuffit, which as of late has been very slow to open on both of my computers. I ended up using the terminal with tar -xf filename and I did that fast enough to untar a wordpress archive and force quit Stuffit. Also, I’m much happier with WordPress- it’s comment spam filters are much better and has an active plugin development community. This brings me to my little project, getting the email to WordPress gateway working for the purpose of using those near useless MMS picture messages I have as part of my data package, the built-in gateway doesn’t work well with pictures. No Calc lecture tomorrow, oh thank God.

Netflix

I’ve decided to try out Netflix for two weeks. It’s a DVD rental service, I know some people at Tech who like it- apparently Tart’s girlfriend has it too lol. It’s free for the first two weeks. You build up a queue of DVDs you want, they overnight the movies to you. You can have three DVDs out at a time, no late fees. We’ll see if I keep it after two weeks. I can’t believe Tart moved back to Tech already… in a rush to get back :P

Transitioning

I’m finally moving to WordPress. The theme system makes playing with the appearance alot easier, which was the biggest barrier in moving to WordPress. I’ve got the color scheme I want for the most part, basically all that’s left is the top image, currently a very light blue. I might go with something dynamic, I’ve seen some interesting stuff lately. We’ll see though.
